Back Cover:
As children growing up in a small Midwest town in Ohio, our parents taught us that we could do anything. Let me tell you what my family and I learned on our caregiving journey – Our parents were right. We could do anything, but not alone! It literally took a team of doctors, social workers, adult day professionals, and extended family and friends (a village, perhaps?) to provide the best care for my parents as they aged.

"Rosie John Doesn’t Live Here Any More – One Family’s Journey In Eldercare” exposes the fact that caregiving, though often filled with sadness, can be a wonderful, heartwarming and often humorous adventure. Let the stories recharge your emotional batteries, bring you laughter and hopefully offer some relief from the arduous task that is adult caregiving.

Come and peruse the travel log of the up and down, twisting and turning roller coaster ride that I experienced in caregiving. Like raising children, it’s difficult to say which approach is right or wrong, better or worse. You simply fly through with a compass and a map and pray that the weather cooperates! God knows that when it comes to caregiving, Mother Nature – not unlike the “caregiven” – is not always on her best behavior!

A Family’s Journey in Eldercare
New Memoir Describes Family’s Emotional Journey of Taking on New Role

Many people will experience giving care to their elders at some point in their lives. In the new book by Tom Begert-Clark, Rosie John Doesn’t Live Here Any More: One Family’s Journey in Eldercare (now available through AuthorHouse), readers experience an endearing and entertaining look at one family’s real-life experience with caregiving

The book follows the ups and downs of Begert-Clark’s rewarding and deeply emotional experience of care giving. He also recounts childhood memories that have influenced his adult life as a caregiver. While he was growing up, his parents taught him that he could do anything, a lesson he truly learned when he found he and his siblings could provide excellent care for their parents. However, they could not do that alone. The journey includes doctors, social workers, adult day professionals, extended family, friends and more.

In the story “White Cotton Socks, Johnson’s and Linoleum,” the author remembers his mother’s ritual of putting socks on his feet and those of his siblings in the morning before they got out of bed so that their feet would not be cold when they touched the floor. In the role of care giving, the action is reversed and it is now the children that pull socks over their parents’ feet to keep them warm. He also describes the joy of his family when they learned their father would begin attending adult daycare, a place they described as “school” in the story “Back to School at Seventy-Nine.”

Rosie John Doesn’t Live Here Any More is a powerful and moving tale of a family’s humorous and tragic journey of care giving that gives readers an understanding of the pain and the rewards of providing for their parents. Tom has been working with the senior population for over 25 years. He has worked with the SCOPE Harbor Adult Day Center in Warren, Ohio, and SarahCare® Adult Day Services, Inc. in Canton, Ohio.
